It would be impossible to exaggerate the importance of this Petition, upon which, I passionately believe, the future of the Scots language, spoken by an estimated 30% of Scotland's population, may largely depend.

Planning for Scotland's Census 2011 is well under way, but sadly, yet again, as will be seen below, the language has not been democratically represented. As matters stand at present (23 November 2009) thecurrent layout (below left) is to be put before the Scottish Parliament by the General Register Office for ScotlandTHIS MONTH and voted on in JANUARY 2010. The layout (below right) or something very similar, is WHAT SCOTS LANGUAGE SUPPORTERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE.
This impassioned plea is an attempt to harness support for our vibrant, distinctive and much-loved language (1) to ensure democratic representation, (2) as a fitting legacy of Homecoming Year and lasting tribute to Burns, (3) as a hugely important first step in increasing the confidence of Scots speakers and (4) to ensure that discrimination in the classroom against Scots speaking children will eventually be consigned to history.
Promises were made and broken in 2001. Without accurate data, it will be impossible to plan for the language's future. Being properly represented in the Census is therefore crucial to its survival.
